I am Lavinia Elise Parcalab. I was born and raised in Romania, but I consider myself a citizen of the world. Working and living abroad in 3 different countries in the past few years has increased my curiosity and interest for cultural diversity. I just can not get enough of this beautiful experience of continuously exploring new places, new cultures and new ways of life.
After majoring in business and living the corporate life for a few years, I realized I was still on a journey, searching for my life’s purpose. This journey led me to trade business suits and offices for yoga pants and bare feet.
Early 2010 I started practicing yoga. My first teacher made me absolutely fall in love with it. It became my favorite thing to do after work. I was fascinated by how one hour of yoga could release all the tension throughout a whole day at the desk.
After moving to Gothenburg, Sweden, in early 2014 I imagined how teaching yoga could become a full-time activity and basically a lifestyle. Wanting a genuine experience, I set on a journey to Rishikesh, the birth place of yoga. An intense month with full days of asana practice, meditation and lectures in a beautiful yoga ashram in the Himalayas gave me a deeper understanding and the desire to pass on the knowledge.
I pursued my dreams and this is how Unfold Your Mat was born. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
One year after my first visit, I booked a second flight to India. This time Mysore, the place where modern yoga was born. 5 weeks of intensive practice at Samyak ashram has allowed me to go deeper in the practice and continue to improve my knowledge as a practitioner , as well as a teacher.
Since November 2016 I have dedicated myself to the daily practice of Ashtanga yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Currently I practice full Primary Series and started the Second Series under the guidance of my main teacher Olle Bengtström. Daily yoga practice allows me to dig deeper into the mysteries of the human mind, understand more about myself and others, teach from experience and learn how to support the practice of my students every day a little more. It is an experience that personally encourages me to approach life with a curious and open mind, allows me to strive for the best, while learning to accept things out of my control, my flaws as a human being, the temporary limitations. Yoga practice opens the heart. With time and dedication we learn how love and compassion towards ourselves and the people around us are the only way to understand the concept of freedom.
My style of yoga? It continues to evolve, as with anything in life. I love to create dynamic sequences, synchronizing the breath with the movement for a stronger body and mind. I am interested in using the postures as a way to discover more about our mind, the patterns that we have and reshape our nervous system for a more peaceful and happy life. During asana classes, I use my anatomical and alignment knowledge to safely guide my students into the postures, still while giving freedom to explore the asanas in their own body and mind. After all yoga is to be experienced and explored. Only by experiencing we understand the theoretical concepts.
Seeing my students fulfilled is the best reward and compliment I could ever get as a teacher.
