New year’s resolution: YES or NO?

Happy New Year everyone!

Here we are. New year. New goals. Infinite possibilities to shine as bright as possible.

This might be the year when you finally start doing that thing you’ve been planing on for a long time.

Did you make your New Year’s resolution?

I honestly don’t like the idea of New Year’s resolution. Why? Because from what I’ve seen so far it remains just a nice thought without a realistic touch of making it happen.

What most of us don’t really know ( or prefer to ignore) is that you cannot change your life if you don’t change your thoughts and habits. We might want to do it, but the moment we realize how difficult it is to build a good habit and when faced with obstacles, most of us will find the easy way of quitting.

So let’s take the classic “I want to do more sports this year!”. It will possibly last for 1-2 months and then slowly the moment you allow the laziness to get back into the game, the motivation will be gone and the old you kicks in.

And why is that?

Because the old you was never gone. It was always there waiting…

Why can’t we keep doing something that is good for us and we know it? Why do we stick to old unhealthy habits?

The reality is, big and meaningful changes come over an extended period of time.

This is definitely not the answer that we want to hear, but it is a fact. It is something our generation has forgotten. And instead we look for fast reward and recognition. We don’t want to put the work.

I personally believe in long term goals and in the short term ones that will help you get closer to the long term ones.

Say you want to take better care of your body and mind this year. Well, like any other project that you are working on in your life, this too should be treated as it is, a project.

I used to believe in motivation and wait for it to come and rescue me from my bad thinking and laziness. Some day I finally woke up and realized, it is all in my habits. You do not become a disciplined person overnight. You do not get closer to your dreams only by dreaming. You cultivate commitment and discipline every single day in all aspects of your life. And in the long run you will get where you want to be.

If you want it bad enough, you will make it happen.

If you don’t, you will find excuses.

What is your experience with new year’s resolutions? Would be happy to hear your opinion about the subject.
